This film was inspired (as director informed) by many folktales, fairy tales and written accounts of historical witchcraft, including journals, diaries and court records. Much of the dialogue comes directly from these period sources.

Robert Eggers directorial debut is profound and artistic. He himself wrote the script of the film. It is obvious the film is one of the all time best horror classics.

The Witch won the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic category at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
